Re-Painting and Illumination of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge ()

Infrasafe (formerly Railsafe) provided track safety personnel for a number of key projects on the Tyne & Wear Metro line. In 2007, we were involved with major rebuilding work on the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge which takes millions of Metro passengers over the River Tyne each year. Transport executive Nexus, which operates the Metro, instructed a major revamp of the Bridge to provide a fresh, contemporary look. This included re-painting the structure and installing the unique ‘Nocturne’ lighting display, acclaimed as an icon to compare with the Angel of the North.

The result was a fresh, contemporary look which has become known as the ‘blue bridge’ due to its bright new paint scheme. The LED lighting, illuminated each night from dusk to dawn, alters in dramatic sequence reflecting the movement of the tides. Thousands of images sent in by the public have been transformed into ‘bar codes’ of colour rippling back and forth across the Bridge.

This prestigious project has undoubtedly been a great success in enhancing the riverside landscape, and Infrasafe is proud to have been associated in the safety work and launch of the new Bridge on 26th April 2007. Infrasafe is a reputed supplier of rail safety services to Nexus.
